Reading Series at Books are Magic

March 17, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us for our next reading series event featuring David Berreby, Terence Degnan, and Dave Major.

David Berreby is the author of Us and Them: The Science of Identity (2d edition, University of Chicago Press, 2008). His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Nature, Smithsonian, Nautilus, Aeon, The New Republic, Slate and many other publications. Much of it is about the science of what makes people tick, though he’s also written about star clusters, bird migration, genetics, tundra ecology, and artificial languages, among other things. David’s speculative fiction has appeared in Nature and been anthologized in Futures from Nature (Tor, 2008) and Nature Futures (Tor, 2013).

Terence Degnan is the author of Still Something Rattles (Sock Monkey Press, 2016) and The Small Plot Beside the Ventriloquist’s Grave (Sock Monkey Press, 2012). His poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Resist Much/Obey Little: Inaugural Poems of the Resistance (Spuyten Duyvil, 2017), part of the Dispatches Editions series edited by Michael Boughn and Kent Johnson. Terence lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter. He’s on the web at terencedegnan.com.

While not wasting immeasurable time as a stand-up comic in New York, Dave Major can be found watching three football games at once and teaching people how to live their fantasy lives. His work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Boston Herald, FantasyPros, and AOL Sports, among others. As Senior Fantasy Analyst for XN Sports, Major has been profiled by Time Out New York for his upcoming book. The project in store studied each week and every single game of NFL history, and will innovate a $70 billion industry through patented processes and a daily recommended allowance of dad jokes.
